The Messier catalog is a set of 110 astronomical objects catalogued by French astronomer Charles Messier in his 'Catalog of Nebulae and Star Clusters' first published in 1774. The catalog was motivated by Messier's interest in finding comets, and includes some of the most spectacular deep-sky objects visible from the northern hemisphere, including galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters.

Fotometriai rendszerek
V-band (Visual): A Johnson V szűrő ~550 nm-en (sárgászöld) központosul, ami megfelel az emberi szem csúcsérzékenységének. Ez a szabványos csillagászati magnitúdórendszer.
B-band (Blue): A Johnson B szűrő ~440 nm-en (kék fény) központosul. Akkor használjuk, ha a V magnitúdó nem érhető el.
Magnitúdó-skála
A csillagászati magnitúdóskála logaritmikus. Minden magnitúdólépés körülbelül 2,512-szeres fényességarányt jelent. A magnitúdókülönbség és a fényességarány közötti összefüggés képlete:

ahol m a magnitúdó és F a fluxus. Alacsonyabb magnitúdó = fényesebb objektum.
Színindex (B-V)
A B-V színindex jelzi az objektum színét és hőmérsékletét:
\[B - V = m_B - m_V\]
Typical values: blue objects have negative B-V, white objects are near 0, yellow objects are near 0.6, and red objects are above 1.0. Reference: Színátalakítás
Magnitúdójelölés
Minden magnitúdóértéket (V)-vel jelölünk a V-sávhoz vagy (B)-vel a B-sávhoz, hogy jelezzük a használt fotometriai rendszert.
Láthatósági útmutató:
• Szabad szem határa: ~6,0 mag
• Látcső: ~10,0 mag
• Kis távcső (10 cm): ~12,0 mag

Koordinátarendszer
Right Ascension (RA): Celestial longitude in hours:minutes:seconds (0h to 24h).
Declination (Dec): Celestial latitude in degrees:arcminutes:arcseconds (-90 to +90 degrees).
Minden koordináta a J2000.0 korszakban van megadva (a 2000. év szabványos referencia-rendszere).
