The Messier catalog is a set of 110 astronomical objects catalogued by French astronomer Charles Messier in his 'Catalog of Nebulae and Star Clusters' first published in 1774. The catalog was motivated by Messier's interest in finding comets, and includes some of the most spectacular deep-sky objects visible from the northern hemisphere, including galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters.

V-band (Visual): מסנן Johnson V ממורכז סביב ~550 ננומטר (צהוב-ירקרק), תואם לשיא הרגישות של העין האנושית. זהו תקן הגודל האסטרונומי.
B-band (Blue): מסנן Johnson B ממורכז סביב ~440 ננומטר (אור כחול). משמש כאשר גודל V אינו זמין.

סולם הבהירות האסטרונומי הוא לוגריתמי. כל שלב בהירות מייצג יחס בהירות של כ~2.512x. הנוסחה המקשרת בין הפרש בהירויות ליחס הבהירות היא:

כאשר m היא בהירות ו-F הוא שטף. בהירות נמוכה יותר = עצם בהיר יותר.
מדד צבע (B-V)
מדד הצבע B-V מציין את צבע העצם ואת הטמפרטורה שלו:
