The Index Catalogue (IC) is an astronomical catalogue compiled by John Louis Emil Dreyer and published in two parts in 1895 and 1908 as supplements to the New General Catalogue. The IC contains 5,386 objects that were discovered after the NGC was published, continuing the systematic cataloging of deep-sky objects.

Sistemes fotomètrics
V-band (Visual): Filtre Johnson V centrat a ~550 nm (groc-verd), coincidint amb el pic de sensibilitat de l'ull humà. Aquest és el sistema estàndard de magnitud astronòmica.
B-band (Blue): Filtre Johnson B centrat a ~440 nm (llum blava). S'utilitza quan la magnitud V no està disponible.
Escala de magnitud
L'escala de magnitud astronòmica és logarítmica. Cada pas de magnitud representa una relació de brillantor d'aproximadament 2,512x. La fórmula que relaciona la diferència de magnitud amb la relació de brillantor és:
\[m_1 - m_2 = -2.5 \times \log_{10}\left(\frac{F_1}{F_2}\right)\]
on m és la magnitud i F és el flux. Una magnitud més baixa = objecte més brillant.
Índex de color (B-V)
L'índex de color B-V indica el color i la temperatura de l'objecte:
\[B - V = m_B - m_V\]
Typical values: blue objects have negative B-V, white objects are near 0, yellow objects are near 0.6, and red objects are above 1.0. Reference: Conversió de color
Notació de magnitud
Cada valor de magnitud està marcat amb (V) per a la banda V o (B) per a la banda B per indicar el sistema fotomètric utilitzat.

• Límit a simple vista: ~6.0 mag
• Prismàtics: ~10.0 mag
• Telescopi petit (4"): ~12.0 mag
• Telescopi mitjà (8"): ~14.0 mag
Sistema de coordenades
Right Ascension (RA): Celestial longitude in hours:minutes:seconds (0h to 24h).
Declination (Dec): Celestial latitude in degrees:arcminutes:arcseconds (-90 to +90 degrees).
Totes les coordenades estan en l'època J2000.0 (marc de referència estàndard per a l'any 2000).
