The Caldwell catalog is an astronomical catalog of 109 star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies for observation by amateur astronomers. It was compiled by Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore (Patrick Moore) and published in 1995. The catalog complements the Messier catalog by including bright deep-sky objects visible from both hemispheres that were not included in Messier's original list.

Sistemas fotométricos
V-band (Visual): Filtro Johnson V centrado em ~550nm (amarelo-verde), correspondendo à sensibilidade máxima do olho humano. Este é o sistema de magnitude astronômica padrão.
B-band (Blue): Filtro Johnson B centrado em ~440nm (luz azul). Usado quando a magnitude V não está disponível.
Escala de magnitude
A escala de magnitude astronômica é logarítmica. Cada passo de magnitude representa uma razão de brilho de ~2,512. A fórmula que relaciona a diferença de magnitude com a razão de brilho é:

onde m é magnitude e F é fluxo. Magnitude menor = objeto mais brilhante.
Índice de cor (B-V)
O índice de cor B-V indica a cor e temperatura do objeto:
\[B - V = m_B - m_V\]

Notação de magnitude
Cada valor de magnitude é marcado com (V) para banda V ou (B) para banda B para indicar o sistema fotométrico utilizado.

• Limite olho nu: ~6,0 mag
• Binóculos: ~10,0 mag
• Telescópio pequeno (4"): ~12,0 mag
• Telescópio médio (8"): ~14,0 mag
Sistema de coordenadas
Right Ascension (RA): Celestial longitude in hours:minutes:seconds (0h to 24h).
Declination (Dec): Celestial latitude in degrees:arcminutes:arcseconds (-90 to +90 degrees).
Todas as coordenadas estão na época J2000.0 (sistema de referência padrão para o ano 2000).
